This page describes various tests of applying ETAS with UCERF2.
The implementation is basically as described on pages 34-38 in the UCERF3 project plan.
Contents here were generated by running the main method of the following class in OpenSHA: scratch.ned.ETAS_Tests.ETAS_Simulator (as it existed on 4/27/11)
Each of the zip files below contains the following for a given ETAS simulation (for the pdf files, scroll to the second page to find the plotting legend):
-
Info.txt - Info about the run including:
- Main shock
- ETAS parameters
- Summary of number of aftershocks in each generation
- srcID_ToIgnore indicates whether any source is ignored in sampling aftershocks (if applied, this is generally to prevent a rupture from triggering itself). If the main shock triggers itself, these events are listed in this file too.
- the total expected number of primary aftershocks above various magnitudes, as well as the expected percent of these that are the main shock triggering itself (if that source is not ignored as indicated above).
- eventList.txt - this file lists aftershock data (mag, hypocenter, etc). The header is hopefully self explanatory; if not, let Ned Field know and he'll add a description of each column here.
- epicenterMap.pdf - Map of hypocenters.
- magNumDistsGraph.pdf - Cumulative mag-freq-dist plot of expected and observed events, for both just primary events and all events. This also shows the expectation for the main shock source if it can trigger itself.
- magProbDistsGraph.pdf - Incremental versions of the above (non cumulative), and normalized so that it's a PDF.
- numAshocksVsTime.pdf - Number of aftershocks per day, shown both for just primary and all generations. The expected number of primary events per day is also shown.
- primaryAshocksDistDecay.pdf - This shows the observed distance decay for both primary and all events, together with the expected values (see legend on second page for details).
- allFiles.zip - This compressed directory contain a GMT-generated map (map.jpg, map.pdf, or map.ps) showing the probability that each lot-lon bin (0.1 by 0.1 degree) will be the location of a primary aftershock. The other contents of this dir are just elements need to make the maps. If this dir is not present, Ned forgot to add it (it's generated by an OpenSHA GMT web service, and the files need to be transferred by hand); pester him if you want it.
